That being said this is not an easy task as Texas Holdem is a community card game unlike stud poker games. Due to the fact that so few cards are dealt it is a game which can accommodate a great number of players. With only two pocket cards dealt per player the actual poker hand relies on the community cards. Keeping this in mind a player must understand that what he sees so does his opponents.
The key to winning more hands than not, is to understand this one basis rule. Your objective is to win money not win the most pots. Temper your enthusiasm and be selective with the hands you play. There is no need to play every hand or see every flop. The very best poker players typically play few hands but when the do they are relatively aggressive and out to maximize their win when odds favor their hand.

In a pot limit poker bets and wagers are limited to the amount of chips in the pot. No Limit poker is for the more experienced players. In this type of poker game there is no established limit for betting and a player may go all in, thus betting his entire chips on one particular hand.
Knowing your opponents is key to understanding how they will react under certain circumstances. Observing your potential opponents play a few rounds will help you to understand their betting strategies and the boundaries they have set. Are they loose players shooting for the pot every time or are there some tight players who fold and wait for the "right hand" to make their move and maximize their winning percentage.
Winning poker hands requires some aggression at the right times but be selective about when to make your move. If you have a player who stays in to the bitter end the possibility of bluffing this person is pretty remote. Keep in mind that this player will also call your bet even if you are holding a winning hand. This is all part of reading the limits of your opponents. Consider the passive player who sits in wait, against this player you may find yourself in pots where you believe it's your game but you aren't 100% sure. If you have the highest possible hand after the flop and he is still in the game you must realize that giving him a free card could loose you the hand. Now is the time to put your aggressive play into action and try to bet him out of the hand before the next card. Understand the head space of your opponents will give you the edge you need to win more often than leaving the pots on the table.
In the game of poker, table position means power. Being in a position to see what your opponents are doing provides you with clues about the real or implied values of their hands. This advantage allows you to play hands you may not necessarily play in any other table position.
If you find yourself on a losing streak, slow it down. Chasing the pot isn't a successful poker strategy. Slow it down and grind it out and remember what starting standards you set for yourself. Sit back for a bit and reflect on what just happened. This gives you the opportunity to just play the very best hands while you are regrouping. Your table image is quite different when you are losing compared to the confident winner who is able to pull out a few bluffs and play a bit more aggressively. Attacking a player when he is already down from his losing streak is human nature and we are all susceptible to it. If they believe you're going to keep losing when you bet, they will call or even raise with hands they might have thrown away when you were "on your game".
