ACADEMICS CALLED TO ANSWER WHETHER POKER IS A SKILL GAME

This debate has been one of contention since September 2006 when the US congress barred the use of credit cards to facilitate online gaming. Horse racing and stock trading were of course exempt from this legislation because it is already regulated and taxed by the American Government. Any other game of chance played online was the victim of this legislation including poker which is growing in leaps and bounds in the internet world. Players come from all over the world to play against each other for real money. Talk about your Friday night poker games!

This group of academics hopes to roll back the law with respects to poker making it a skill game which could be legally played online in any US state.
Supporters of the Online Gambling Bill which was inserted last minute to a Port Security Bill argue that online gambling feeds addiction and the vast number of addicted players are college students who rack up huge losses on their credit cards. That may be the case however who is to say that college students don't bet the horses with their credit cards and rack up huge debt.

The facts are that poker is really a game of combined skill and a little luck. Horse racing can be viewed as the same. You can be the very best horse race handicapper but there are always variables that can change the outcome of a race.

So to be fair to all those who enjoy playing poker rather than buying the state lottery tickets or wagering on the various US race tracks, why can't those who prefer to play poker enjoy their game of choice rather than hiding and playing covertly online.

With the US economy in shambles one would think that the Government would welcome another avenue of taxation and reap the benefits that so many other countries have realized.
