Ante:
An ante in 7 card stud is mandatory in order to play. This ante changes with the betting limits at the poker table. The low limit tables usually require a 10% ante up to a high of 25% at the higher stakes tables. The norm at most online poker rooms is only a 10% ante because of the lower limit stakes.
Dealing the Cards:
The dealer will begin his deal clockwise starting to their immediate left. One card is dealt face down at a time around the table until each player has two "pocket cards" face down and one single card face up. This card is also known as "the door" card. After each player receives their first three cards the dealer will indicate which player will open the betting. This is determined by the lowest "door card". If two players are holding the same "door card", the lowest will be determined by suit. Spades over Hearts followed by Diamonds and finally Clubs as the lowest. Now the fun begins with the first betting round which is known as the 3rd Street.
3rd Street
The first betting round begins with the player holding the lowest "door card". The bet must be equal to twice the ante. If the low door player doesn't make this bet he must fold and the opening bet passes to the player on their immediate left. The player clockwise from the opener can call the bet by matching the opening bet; rise the betting with the low betting limit or fold. Throughout the entire 3rd Street bets and raises are fixed at the low betting limit.
4th Street
4th Street begins with the dealer giving each player another "open card" or face up card. The opening bet on this round begins with the high hand as determined by the open or face up cards. The opener may Check, (pass) or bet. If they choose to bet at the low limit, this fixes all betting to the low limit for this particular betting round. When the high hand is an open pair, the bettor may bet at the upper limit and this fixes all the raises in the round to the upper limit.
5th Street & 6th Street
During the 5th and 6th Street rounds the cards is dealt open or face up. The high hand opens the betting for these rounds. All bets and raises are at the upper limit.
7th Street
The final card, also known as "the river" card is dealt. This card is dealt pocket or face down. All bets and raises are at the high limit. After all the betting is complete the "showdown" begins. Showdown
The opener now reveals his pocket cards. At this time a player who wishes to compete with this hand must also reveal their pocket cards, or they may yield and fold. The dealer will designate the winner and the pot is theirs.
