5 CARD STUD RULES

5-Card Stud is the simplest of poker games to learn. Even the newest of players can learn the fundamentals of poker by playing this simple game. This is a great place to start if you are looking to hone your take on your opponent's potential hand. With 4 of the 5 cards visible on the table it is quite a bit easier to determine what your opponent could be holding.

The game of 5-card stud begins with the dealer giving each player 2 cards. In traditional stud poker the 1st card known also as the hole card is dealt face down. The second card also known as the open card is dealt face up. After the open card is dealt to the last player, a round of betting begins. Depending on the rules of the house it is typically the low card on the table that begins the betting round. The betting continues around the table until all players are either in or out.

The third card also known as 3rd street is now dealt out by the dealer face up, the betting resumes with the high card opening the betting round. Once the betting round is complete the 4th card or 4th street is dealt to the remaining players face up. Once all the remaining players receive their card another round of betting resumes. At this point the players will begin to see their high poker hand taking form. Usually this round of betting is a higher betting limit round.

Finally the 5th and final card also known as the 5th street is dealt to the remaining players.

Typically this card is also dealt face up but I have played in home games and social poker games where it is dealt face down. If the 5th street is dealt face down it becomes much more difficult to read your opponents potential hand. The final betting round begins after the last player in receives his final card. This betting limit is traditionally a higher limit round. Once the betting is complete each player will display his/her hand, the highest poker hand at the table wins the pot.
